English for Teaching Purposes

The course is aimed to raise teacher’s awareness of the principles and practice of teaching English as a foreign language to secondary school students and adult learners.

Who is the course for?

• Practicing teachers (schools, colleges, universities) seeking Continuing Professional Development
• Newly qualified graduates wishing to start a teaching career in English Language Teaching

What does the course cover? 

You will cover the main topics of TEFL:

• Learners and teachers
• Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
• Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
• Developing teaching skills

This intensive course requires full time attendance at the Centre for 70 + contact hours over 10 days as well as being able to dedicate personal study time for a similar number of hours. 

Entry requirements 

• Competent English language user (between CEFR Level B1 and C1 or above) 
• Educated to the standard required for entry into higher education. 

How you will be assessed?

You will be continually assessed throughout the course and there is no final examination. The two types of assessment are:

Teaching practice

You will teach for a total of 2 hours, working with classes (groupmates) at a minimum of two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance.

Written assignments

You will complete two written assignments (each 750 - 1,000 words). These focus on:

• teaching skills
• teaching language (lexis or grammar).
